Shear thickening in dense suspensions driven by particle interlocking

چکیده

The processing of dense suspensions is a crucial step in many industries including mining; the production ceramics; and manufacture pharmaceuticals. It widely reported that these exhibit nonlinear behaviours such as shear thinning thickening, with particle surface contacts recently being accepted primary culprit latter. In light this, modelling community have started to explore role tribology, predominantly by incorporating Coulombic friction models borrowed from field dry granular matter. Full details interactions between surfaces remain unclear, however, it suggested physical interlocking asperities may be key. Here, we use particle-based simulations explicitly effect on rheology micron-sized solids Newtonian fluid. Our simplified model recovers thinning, thickening jamming phenomena commonly seen experiments.

Generality of shear thickening in dense suspensions.

Suspensions are of wide interest and form the basis for many smart fluids. For most suspensions, the viscosity decreases with increasing shear rate, that is, they shear thin. Few are reported to do the opposite, that is, shear thicken, despite the longstanding expectation that shear thickening is a generic type of suspension behaviour. Here we resolve this apparent contradiction. We demonstrate...

Localized stress fluctuations drive shear thickening in dense suspensions.

Dense particulate suspensions exhibit a dramatic increase in average viscosity above a critical, material-dependent shear stress. This thickening changes from continuous to discontinuous as the concentration is increased. Using direct measurements of spatially resolved surface stresses in the continuous thickening regime, we report the existence of clearly defined dynamic localized regions of s...

Discontinuous shear thickening without inertia in dense non-Brownian suspensions.

A consensus is emerging that discontinuous shear thickening (DST) in dense suspensions marks a transition from a flow state where particles remain well separated by lubrication layers, to one dominated by frictional contacts. We show here that reasonable assumptions about contact proliferation predict two distinct types of DST in the absence of inertia. The first occurs at densities above the j...

Shear thickening regimes of dense non-Brownian suspensions.

We propose a unifying rheological framework for dense suspensions of non-Brownian spheres, predicting the onsets of particle friction and particle inertia as distinct shear thickening mechanisms, while capturing quasistatic and soft particle rheology at high volume fractions and shear rates respectively. Discrete element method simulations that take suitable account of hydrodynamic and particle...

Effects of particle softness on shear thickening of microgel suspensions.

A series of microgel particles composed of a polystyrene (PS) core and a thermo-sensitive poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) shell with different shell thicknesses were investigated to elucidate the effect of microgel softness on its shear thickening behavior. Since the softness of the microgels increases with decreasing temperature through the volume phase transition effect of PNIPAM shell, ...
